On 17 April 2007 I was admitted to practice law and became the newest member of Wisewoulds Corporate Transactions and Business Services Group.
My path to becoming a lawyer hit a crossroads when I completed a Bachelor of Laws at the University of Melbourne in 2003 (having combined the course with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Psychology): I had no idea what to do next.
Unlike other law students who spent their final semesters planning their careers, I was often seen in the back of lecture theatres planning flight sectors for a round-the-world tripbut hey, at least I had actually attended the lectures!
Just days after my final exam, I was bound for the US, followed by Canada, the UK, Europe and Egypt. Along the way I worked two winters in the Rocky Mountains as an airport shuttle driver and did a six-month stint as an office assistant in the Court Services in London. The many highlights of the voyage include getting to ski the slopes of Vail on days off, sightseeing in true American style (in an RV), pub-crawling in London and tent-crawling at Oktoberfest, and making up for lost summers on the Mediterranean and Red Seas. Lowlights included American food, English weather, and Singapore.
I returned to Australia in September 2005 with about as little idea of what to do next as I'd had two years earlier. Fortunately, I found out about a firm called Wisewoulds that seemed to be a perfect fit for me, and suddenly there I was as a fresh faced articled clerk.
My year as an articled clerk was over in a flash, and although some of the fun and games are gone (like our shared office, affectionately known as The Pod), it has been nice to settle down in a permanent department.
In the short time I have been working as a solicitor I have been fortunate enough to be involved in a variety of different matters. I have helped to draft various types of business agreements and have providing advice to clients on topics ranging from intellectual property to privacy. I have also worked on several commercial litigation disputes.
So far, working at Wisewoulds has been a great experience. Im glad to actually be starting to sort out those career plans, which happily include Wisewoulds. Best of all, the whole career thing hasnt stopped me from planning more holidays for the future along with our firm retreat to Vietnam in July, Im locked in for more skiing in Canada and new years eve in New York. It cant come quickly enough!
