Julie Barkla

My name is Julie Barkla. In the hope that it might make me sound clever, I obtained from Melbourne University the following academic qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Arts majoring in Criminology and Psychology (completed at Honours level);
  • Bachelor of Laws (with Honours);
  • Master of Laws (all subjects completed at Honours level).

I am presently contemplating further study as I really can't help myself.

I was hired by Wisewoulds in 1997 and have since practised with Wisewoulds as an Articled Clerk, a Solicitor, a Senior Associate and now a Partner. As a friend at another firm once observed, Wisewoulds is the Camelot of law firms - I wouldn't be anywhere else.

My desire to know everything has created for me a very eclectic legal practice. I am a property lawyer by trade, but try my hand in a number of other areas, some of which I wouldn't do without. In addition to having confidence in my capacity to handle matters falling right across the spectrum of what is broadly termed "property law", I also like to think I can construct a sensible will, answer a taxation query or two, advise on discrimination law issues and handle a range of matters falling within the "banking and finance" umbrella.

I am also a member of the Law Institute of Victoria and its Commercial and Property sections.

I am also a Director and the Compliance Officer of the firm's affiliated investment entity, Wisewoulds Nominees Limited, an entity with an Australian Financial Services Licence which operates the Wisewoulds Nominees Managed Mortgage Investment Scheme (ARSN: 120 649 756). I lecture and have written a number of papers on Mortgage and Credit Law.

I enjoy reading and watching or playing sport and have an irrational love of the Sydney Swans, the Tour de France and the Olympic Games. Nothing makes me cry like a stirring sporting victory. My appreciation of the skills of Leo Barry frequently subject me to ridicule.

I like to think I demonstrate honesty, integrity and a level head in my dealings with staff, clients and other law firms.

My primary legal ambition is to act for the Sydney Swans. Failing that, I will content myself with upholding high professional standards in the ethical, reasonable and competent practice of the law.
