Career Start
- Starting in 1963 as a student I worked with and was mentored by Bernard Nolan and his great nephew Tom Nolan (father of my colleague John Nolan) and Bob Lord (father of Margaret Wales-King).
- Bernard Nolan a sole practitioner was well known in Melbourne for his clients e.g. John Wren (Power without Glory) and his work with various religious orders as well as his sporting achievements e.g. Captain Melbourne Football Club, VRC Committee Man, etc.
- I undertook articles with Mr Nolan in 1966 and became a partner in the firm which changed its name to Bernard Nolan and Co in September 1968.
Career reflections
- Appointed solicitor for Australian Hotels Association in 1975 and represented it in four major enquiries namely Davies enquiry (reform of Liquor Legislation) Brokenshire enquiry (minimum price of packaged beer) Nieuwenhuysen (reform of liquor laws) and Wilcox enquiry (gaming machines in Victoria).
- I have had the good fortune to represent many fantastic clients over the years and am now delighted to be representing the third generation of several clients.
- I represented the Victorian Golf Association taking Metropolitan and Country Golf Clubs through Equal Opportunity Legislation and its effect upon Clubs.
- I represented a lady Hotel Keeper charged with breach of Equal Opportunity Legislation for failing to serve a breast feeding mother in her Hotel.
- Honorary solicitor for The Victoria Golf Club for almost 30 years including a term of 10 years as a Director of the Club the last three as Club President.
- Appointed a member of the Liquor Control Commission for the State of Victoria in 1980 for a term of seven years, resigned and back to Mahonys within 50 weeks and I managed to give up smoking during that time.
- I have represented many sporting, social and recreational Clubs including four AFL Clubs, two race Clubs, many golf Clubs, social and community Clubs.
- Senior Partner and Managing Partner of the law firm Mahonys for a number of years.
- Advisor to Liquor Stop Promotions Limited and Chairman of their annual overseas conferences in excess often years.
- Interesting matters e.g. sale of Chloe of Young & Jacksons fame, getting Nathan Buckley to Collingwood, recovering $48,000.00 on a winning quadrella ticket lost in the Great Bookie Robbery, several Ad Colligenda Bona grants of Probate. Chairing meeting of Collingwood Football Club members and advising Essendon Football Club on move from Windy Hill to MCG.
- I have acted pro-bono for persons/institutions including Father Bob Maguire, Outback Spirit Foundation and various other groups.
- The administration of the estates of Margaret Wales-King and Paul King following their senseless and tragic murders.
